Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

50 years ago today, on the 18th August 1971, Private Frederick Joseph Ranger, (enlisted as HERRON), 20th Battalion (Reg No-2698), labourer and dredge service fireman from Maitland Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales and Moore Street, West Maitland, N.S.W. (1923) and the Empire Hotel, Hunter Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. (1938) and 6 Bell Street, Maryville, N.S.W. (1942), father of one? (Emma), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 73. CATHOLIC 2-42. 59.

Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 29th April 1898 to John F (or Robert?) and Edith Agnes Ranger  of Oakhampton Road, West Maitland, New South Wales and Bourke Street, West Maitland, N.S.W. and 6 Bell Street, Maryville, N.S.W., husband of Hannah Herron nee Bird (married 1922, Nottingham, England, died?), Fred enlisted January 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 22.2.1918 (influenza), and wounded in action - 31.8.1918 (GSW left arm, severe, Battle of Mont Saint-Quentin), Fred was discharged from service on the 22nd July 1920, and did not return home with wife Hannah until the 28th December 1922.

I have not located Mr. Herron or Ranger’s name inscribed on the Kurri Kurri Soldiers' Memorial or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Fred’s name has not been inscribed on the headstone with mother Edith, so February 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Did not receive War Medals (forfeited).
Many thanks to John Gillam for the notification and extensive family history, and descendants should contact John and Yvonne in their fight to have Fred’s service medals eligibility restored.

Gary Mitchell: This summary is for my good friends John Gillam and Yvonne Fletcher.

Lest We Forget.
