Cecil was the son of Joseph and Sarah Jane Thompson; husband of Elsie May Thompson, of Loch, Victoria. His elder brother, 2503 Pte. Hubert David William Thompson 8th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Pozieres 25 July 1916, aged 26.

Another brother, 2139 Corporal Percival Joseph Thompson 8th Battalion AIF, returned to Australia 24 August 1918.

Cecil joined the 37th Battalion on the Western Front less than a month before he died. He had married Elsie May just before he left for oversea. She was granted a pension on the loss of her husband.
