Add my storyBiography contributed by Cowell RSL
Mark was the fourth of six children born to Francis and Harriet Reed (nee Chapman) and of the six children three were boys and three were girls. Mark’s older siblings were Thomas, Frances and Newton and his younger sisters Rose and Lily were twins.
After leaving school at Mundoora, Mark travelled to Franklin Harbour with his brothers where they took up farming in the district. The brothers soon became well known and respected in and around Cowell with Mark described as having a quiet disposition and popular with all the residents in and around Cowell.
Mark Reed enlisted at Keswick Barracks, South Australia on 2 March 1915. He was allotted to C Company 27th Battalion and after weeks of intensive training, route marches, farewell parades in front of enthusiastic crowds, the Battalion which became known as “Unley’s Own” embarked on the HMAT Geelong on 31 May 1915.
After further training in Egypt, Battalion landed at Gallipoli in September and remained there until the evacuation in December.
Upon their return to Egypt the re-consolidation and "Doubling of the AIF" took place and many 27th Battalion men and reinforcements were posted to a range of other units as the new organisation took shape, and new drafts of reinforcements arrived. In France, Private Reed remained with the 27th except for two days he spent in 6th Field Ambulance ill with Pharyngitis.
On 15 August Private Mark Reed transferred to 7th Light Trench Mortar Battery with whom he remained until he was severely wounded in the head, right side and back by shrapnel on 16 November 1916 around the area of Flers and Gueudecourt, France. He was transported to the 38th Casualty Clearing Station for treatment but died there on 25 November 1916.
Private Reid was buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Plot VI, Row C, Grave No. II, at Mericourt-L'Abbe, France.
Fortunately, Mark’s brother Newton survived the war. He returned to Cowell and lived there until he died on 4 February 1967, aged 77 years. He was buried in Cowell Cemetery.
