Son of James McDonald Upfill and Ellen Mary Upfill of Leslie Street, Auburn, Victoria. Brother of Edwin Claude Upfill who returned to Australia on 20 October 1919 having served with the 6th Battalion
24 February 1915 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 2nd Field Ambulance and with the rank of Private and service number 307
24 July 1916 - wounded - shell shock
Commenced return to Australia on 9 February 1919 aboard HT Ascanius disembarking on 3 April 1919
