Reuben was the fifth of eight Children of Thomas Herbert Cross (born 1860 in Morven, Tasmania - aka Herbert) and Emma Jane Medwin (born 1866 in Forrest, Tasmania), Thomas and Emma married in 1886 in Horton, Tasmania and settled in Emu Bay to raise their family. Thomas, a Contractor, committed suicide by shooting himself with a rifle in 1916 at Rouse's Camp in Waratah, Tasmania.

Reuben was a Labourer in St Helen's in Tasmania when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. He served as a Private (Service No: 2471) with 5th Reinforcements 26th Battalion and was severely wounded - GSW thigh - at Gallipoli on 12 December 1915. Reuben died of his wounds in 21st General Hospital in Alexandria on 4 January 1916
