Son of William Oates and Alice Oates of Ballengarra, Wilson River, NSW.
Ronald Mervyn Oates who was killed in action on 25 February 1917 while serving with the 35th Battalion and is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery. Plot V111, Row B, Grave 175; Reginald Oates who returned to Australia on 28 June 1919 having served with the Australian Army Medical Corps Details.
