Son of Charles Ernest HARLING and Blanche Olive HARLING nee FISK, Harlington Boardinghouse, Gorliston-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England

Taken Prisoner of War in Limburg and spent 19 months in captivity.

After the war Charles did not return to Australia but instead sailed to Canada and lived out his days there.

Married Phoebe Fisk HARLING in 1920

Charles Harling, born in England, was a sailor in his younger days and lived in Australia for many years.  He talked with an Australian accent. In England he married his wife Phoebe, and they came to the Charlton School district in 1920 where they raised sheep and had a dairy farm on Sec. 19.18.3  They had no children.

The Harlings stayed home most of th etime but always had lots of visitors because of their cheerful and generous natures.  He was very comical and good singer, being very popular for his old English music hall songs.  He had one of the first cars in the area. They sold the farm in 1946/47 and moved to Oak Point and took over the Post Office.

They took part in community affairs. Charlie was secretary of the Legion.  Phoebe had a hobby of sending birthday cards to all her friends.  After about five years they retired and spent their last years in Oak Point.

Death notice - On Janury 7, 1962 at the Deer Lodge Hospital, Chalres William Harling, of Oak Point, Manitoba, aged 74 years.  Mr Harling was born in hackney, England and had been a resident of Canada for the past 41 years.  Mr. Harling was secretary of the Canadian Legion Branch at Oak Point Manitoba.  Funeral service will be held at 1.00pm Wednesday in Kerr's Funeral Chapels Ltd., 120 Adelaide Street.  Internment in the military plot, Brookside Cemetery.
