James was the son of Ernest Alexander Neely and Charlotte Neely, of North Melbourne. His dad worked on the Victorian railways, and passed away in 1913.
James served at Gallipoli from September 1915. He was killed during the 24th Battalion’s first engagement on the Western Front at Pozieres. His younger brother 1593 Pte. John Neely 7th Battalion AIF had been killed in action at Lone Pine on 8 August 1915, aged 26.
Another brother, 1547 Pte. Leonard William Neely 27th Battalion AIF, was sent home to Australia due to a shrapnel wound to his arm and compound fracture to his humerus bone for which he was listed as dangerously ill in June 1917. He returned on 20 December 1917.
