Biography contributed by Cheryl Thompson
Married name McWilliam.
A boarder from Roma, Ella graduated from St Margaret’s in 1908. She joined the Australian Army Nursing Services and was posted to India where she cared for patients, including Turkish prisoners of war, British and other Allied troops. She endured harsh weather conditions, and both staff and troops battled disease. She then served on the frontlines in Egypt where she faced new challenges, including a lack of equipment and long work hours. Ella was awarded a medal for her service and in 2017, her image was used among a ‘Women in War’ stamp series issued by Australia Post.
