Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

74 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 20th August 1949, Private William Miller, 36th Battalion (Reg No-2613), miner from Carrington Street, West Wallsend, New South Wales and Clyde Inn Hotel, West Wallsend, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 73. CATHOLIC 2-42. 41.

Born at Bedlington, Northumberland, United Kingdom about 1876 to George and Sarah Frances Miller; husband of Catherine Miller nee Ryan (married 1899, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 26.6.1960, age 80, sleeping here.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 9th November 1916.
Wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (GSW or SW left leg, 1st Battle of Passchendaele).

Invalided to England 17.10.1917.

Admitted to hospital 12.2.1918 (not stated).

William was invalided home on the 5th January 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 7th May 1919.

Mr. Miller’s name has been inscribed on the West Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 18/8/1949.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
Officially commemorated 14.2.1950.

William also has an individual Memorial Plaque at The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall, located in the cemetery grounds.

I will place poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Headstone inscription incorrectly states date of death as the 28th August 1949.
