Another Returned Digger from The Great War resting in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery.

Private Robert James Thompson, 30th Battalion (Reg No-554), blacksmith's labourer and gas employee from Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 65 King's Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 39. ANGLICAN 2-115. 58.

Born at East Maitland, New South Wales on the 24th May 1892 to Robert James and Martha Matilda Thompson nee Warby of Lambton Road, Lambton, New South Wales; husband of Sarah Margaret Thompson nee Edwards (married 28.2.1919 at Sydenham Chapel, Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill, United Kingdom, died?), Robert enlisted July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 3.11.1916 (myalgia).
Wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (GSW right thigh, right shoulder, mild, Battle of Fromelles), 29.9.1918 (GSW back).

Returned home August 1919 with wife Sarah.
Name not located inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I placed a cross at Robert’s unmarked grave July 2021, and also submitted an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, and this was accepted August 2021.
