Biography

James Hannon – Service Number 5342/85857 was enlisted for services abroad at the Victoria Barracks on the 28/2/16 and was fit for service on this day.

James Hannon was born in Junee on the 25th of May 1886. He lived at 74 Buckingham St Redfern Junee NSW. Before the war he worked as a labourer and was married to Charlotte Elizabeth Hannon. They had no children and he enlisted on the 28/2/16 at the age of 30 years and 9 months. His last rank was a private and he was in the 18th Battalion.

He agreed to allot no less than two fifths of the pay payable to him from time to time during his service to support his wife.

He was in the 18th Battalion in France and he was a Private and on the 27/1/17 he was recruited into this Battalion.

James fought from the trenches most of the day. The greatest difficulty he and others endured were the shortages of water and food, lack of sleep and the millions of flies and lice. There were unburied bodies floating in water. Occasionally a “trench” rat would appear which fed on the bodies, disease was everywhere, soldiers excluding James suffered from trench foot from the exposure of their feet from damp and unsanitary condition. However, he was wounded on the 8/6/17 and suffered from a gun shot wound to his right shoulder On that same day he was admitted to the hospital of Rouen. One day later he was transferred to England and was admitted to the Birmingham hospital.

On the 19/6/17 James was reported absent without leave from the 19th to the 30th of June. He was now known as a registered offender on the 19/7/17 and on top of that he was docked 24 days pay and in custody awaiting trial.

On the day 15/8/17 he had abdominal pain when he was diagnosed with appendicitis and fell seriously ill. Five days later on the 20/8/17 James was taken to Delhi hospital in England. He embarked to England from France on the 10/4/18. There he was injured on the 7/4/18 from a gun shot wound in his right foot and was admitted to the Colchester hospital but two days later on the 13/4/18 he was transferred to the Abbeville hospital.

On the 31/4/18 he was unfit for service and returned to Australia for gun shot wounds in his right foot and fractured metatarsals. Disembarked at Melbourne for Sydney 28/9/18 G.S.W Rt/Foot. It has not been documented as to how Private James Hannon died.
