John McGown was the son of John and Mary McGown, of Surry Hills, New South Wales. He had been born in Glasgow, Scotland, and the family had come to Australia when he was very young. The mother, Mary, passed away in Sydney on 30 November 1915, and their father, John McGown, died during January 1920.

John lost two younger brothers during the war, 3165 Pte. Alfred George McGown 3rd Battalion AIF, was killed in action near Flers, France, on 5 November 1916, aged 22 and 3855 Sapper Walter Carrington McGown 15th Field Company Engineers, was killed in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917, at 19 years of age.

John was wounded in action 10 October 1916, a gunshot wound to left leg, and evacuated to England with compound fractures to tibia and fibula, left leg. He was returned to Australia 10 September 1917, and discharged permanently unfit during May 1918.
