Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Augustus William FAERBER, (Service Number 29077), who was born in Sydney in 1885, was a salesman employed by S. Hoffnung & Co. in the fancy goods section of their warehouse when he was arrested in 1908 and charged with stealing goods from them, which he had passed on to an accomplice for sale. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years hard labour. In February 1911, presumably having served his sentence, he joined the NSWGR as a ‘packer’ in the Metropolitan Division of the Permanent Way Branch, later that year being promoted to sub-ganger, but in 1913 reverted to ‘general labourer’.

In June 1916 he was given leave to enlist in the AIF. Whether he had disclosed his criminal record to the Railways is not known, but he certainly withheld it from the AIF, answering the relevant questions on his enlistment papers in the negative. He stated his ‘trade or calling’ as ‘ganger railway’.

On 25 June 1917 he was killed in action, and buried in the British Cemetery, Ruyaulcourt, four miles ESE of Bapaume.
