Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

George enlisted in the 7th Battalion at the age of 18 years and two months. Both his parents gave their signed consent to him enlisting. When he reached Egypt, he was transferred to the 60th Battalion during the reorganization of the AIF in early 1916. His first major battle was at Fromelles and he was reported as missing on the 19 July 1916. No light was shed on his demise and his he was confirmed by a Court of Enquiry as ‘killed in action on the 19 July 1916’ during August 1917.

His older brother, 3530 Pte. James Frederick Leheny 8th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action only 18 days beforehand on 1 July 1916, aged 25.

Another brother, 2855 Sergeant Joseph Alexander Leheny 37th Battalion AIF, enlisted at 21 and survived the war, returning to Australia in July 1919.

They were the sons of William and Margaret Lilly Leheny of Brunswick Victoria.
