John was the son of Lott STEPHENS & Edith Alice FOOTE and was born on the 6th of March 1895 in Royal Park, Queenstown, SA.

His parents were married on the 19th of August 1892 at the residence of his father, Findon, SA.

He was the second child born into the family of 6 children. His mother died on the 17th of September 1903 and his father remarried to Ruth Gertrude SMITH on the 26th of May 1909 in the St George Church, Pt. Adelaide and John gained another 3 siblings.

John enlisted into the 32nd Battalion, 5th Reinforcements on the 13th of January 1916 in Adelaide SA and was allotted the service number 2732. He listed his stepmother; as his next of kin.

He embarked from Adelaide aboard the “Shropshire” on the 25th of March 1916. He was entrained in England. He was transferred to the 48th Battalion  and then taken on strength on the 3rd of September 1916 in France.

On the 27th of February 1917 he was transferred back to the Reading War Hospital in England, suffering from Pleurisy. He spent several months recovering before heading back to France to rejoin his Battalion.

John suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg on the 23rd of June 1918 at Sailly-le-Sec, Somme. He was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge, England on the 8th of July 1918.

John returned to Australia on the 16th of March 1919 aboard the “Dunluce Castle”.

John was discharged on the 31st of July 1919.

In 1941 they lived in Maple Avenue, Royal Park.

John died on the 20th of January 1962 in Adelaide and is buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery; Section O, Drive C, Path 43, Plot 4BS.

Gwendoline died on the 27th of August 1993 in the Koolunga Nursing Home, Semaphore, SA and is buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery; Section O, Drive C, Path 43, Plot 4BS, with John.
