Clifford Bickham was the son of Henry and Mrs. Mary Ann Bickham, Lefroy, Tasmania. His father had passed away in 1909 when Clifford was twelve years of age.
Clifford enlisted the same day as his older brother, Charles Bickham on 30 March 1916. He was measured at six feet two inches in height. They were given consecutive regimental numbers in the 40th Battalion, (Tasmanian).
Clifford joined the 40th Battalion on the Western Front during February 1917 and was killed during the first day of the 3rd Division’s attack at Messines, Belgium on 7 June 1917.
His older brother, 784B Cpl. Charles Henry Bickham 40th Battalion AIF, died a few months later near Passchendaele, on 12 October 1917, aged 30. A third brother, Colin Bickham, was sent home to Australia during 1918 due to the deaths of his two brothers.
They were the sons of Henry and Mrs. Mary Ann Bickham, Lefroy, Tasmania. The father had passed during 1909, so their widowed mother received all of their entitlements.
