Freddy Thulborn - much loved little brother

Freddy was son of John and Eliza (Smith) Thulborn, born in Hindmarsh in 1896. His parents and Grandparents had all been born in South Australia after their ancestors immigrated as early as 1952.

Freddy's mother Eliza died in 1903 when he was about 7yo, and he had both older and younger siblings. His sister Mary Theresa (Thulborn) Brice, who was 17 at the time, looked after the family even after her marriage in 1908. Their father died in 1909.

Mary's daughter, Olive Evelyn Grace (Brice) Chellew, was born in 1911 and remembered Freddy being at their home often. She said her mother adored Freddy, and Olive thought he was lovely and beautiful. Mary and Freddy both had beautiful dark auburn hair.

Olive passed on a memory that Freddy had put his age up by a number of years when he enlisted and Mary tried to intervene after she found out, but was told too bad that he was needed and already in service. This is can currently not be proven as there are no birth records for him or his siblings.

In war records it states that he had tattoos on right forearm and both upper arms. Height: 5ft 5.5inches Weight: 126lbs Chest 34 36.5inches Complexion: fresh Eyes: Grey Hair: Brown Religion: Roman Catholic

His service was short;

His war records also show that one of Freddy's other sisters Nellie, was still hunting his medals in the 1950s as she too was very fond of Freddy. The medals had been given to Mary as his next of kin in 1922. Mary died in 1926.

Linda (Daly) Hay is daughter of Heather (Chellew) Daly, who is daughter of Olive.
This story is from Heather's childhood memory and F.P.Thulborn's war records
