Biography

Before the War:

Charles Burkin Burchell had a very good life before the war. Charles was born on the 13th of May 1877. He was born in Norwood, Adelaide, South Australia. He went to Norwood Public School. He had a wife, Clara Vigas, who changed her last name to Burchell, who he had married in 1902. He had five children, ranging from the ages of four to fourteen. He was a Baptist, and helped his father with a Farrier business as his apprentice for five years. He had previously spent three years in the 16th Light Horse during previous wars. He was discharged from them after his time expired. Charles lived in Windsor Avenue, Murray Park, Magill, South Australia. Charles had never been arrested or accused of any crime. He had a clean record and was a respectable member of his community. He was 5 foot 4 inches, weighed 143 pounds (~65 kilograms) and had a bad back. He also had a tattoo on his right arm and a scar on his left leg. He had grey eyes, a fair skin tone and brown hair, along with a moustache.

Enlistment:

Charles enlisted on the 12th of September 1914. He was given the rank and role of a Shoeing Smith, and a Colonel. He joined the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, Military District Four. He was 37 when he enlisted, his 38th birthday coming up in seven months.

Training:

Charles trained with the rest of his brigade in Egypt, Alexandria. His brigade travelled on the TRANSPORT A7 Medic. The training consisted mostly of drills such as marching and shooting.

War Time:

Charles Brigade was the first to land on Gallipoli, on the 25th of April 1915. They provided cover fire for the landing of all the others. Charles survived Gallipoli and went to serve in Belgium (The Somme), Pozières and France. He spent weeks in hospital while in Alexandria due to his bad back. His hospital time lasted over three months and he was transferred to three different hospitals. Charles was given leave due to his father dying, and returned home on the 23rd of May 1917. Charles was discharged on the 17th of October 1917. He returned home to look after his family and keep the business running.

The ANZAC Spirit:

Charles Burkin Burchell showed great amounts of the ANZAC Spirit throughout the duration of World War One. He was awarded three medals, the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1914/15 Star. The Star was rewarded after a successful bombing research mission Charles was in returned. The acts of bravery and courage portrayed by Charles and his fellow soldiers explicitly show the ANZAC spirit in action. Charles and his family should be proud of his work for his country.
