Biography contributed by John Oakes

George John HAWKES (Service Number 901) was born in Richmond, Middlesex, in 1886.  When he enlisted in the AIF in September 1914, he gave his ‘trade or calling’ as ‘Butcher’,. He is also known to have been employed by the NSW Government Railways on the Lismore to Murwillumbah line in 1911 and in 1914 on the Grafton to Murwillumbah line. He enlisted at Lismore.

He was allotted to the 15th Battalion. He was sent with them to Gallipoli in April 1915.  From 30th April he was promoted to Corporal and then Lance Sergeant.  He was slightly wounded in action (L wrist and knee) on 13th May, and evacuated to hospital in Egypt. He returned to Gallipoli in July and re-joined his unit there.

He was posted ‘wounded and missing in action’ on 8th August 1915. A Court of Enquiry almost a year later determined that he must have been killed in action at that time.

He has no known grave, but he is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial.  A war pension was granted to his mother in England.
