The son of an import merchant, William Wignall Sugden and Mary Alice Clayton, Edgar Sugden was born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England in 1883, being one of eight children. After growing up and attending school in Ilkley, Yorkshire he worked as a labourer before departing from London with Ethel and Herbert Thornton Fox on the SS Otway on 17 February 1910, arriving at Fremantle, Western Australia on 22 March 1910.
In association with Fox, Sugden farmed in Latham (aka Latham Rock), Western Australia between 1912 and 1913. It was hard work with 50 acres cleared in 1912 and 20 acres sown to crops. However, the partnership didn’t last - being dissolved in April 1913 with Fox retaining all interests and continuing to farm the property.
Sugden then appears to have begun establishing his own farm having obtained a 160 acres homestead block at Latham, however this allotment was subsequently forfeited and readvertised for selection in late 1919.
When war was declared, Sugden enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Helena Vale on 7 September 1914 having previously served seven years with the British Territorial Army. He embarked from Fremantle with the 11th Battalion AIF for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A11 Ascanius on 2 November 1914.
After training in Egypt, he was a member of the 11th Battalion that formed part of the covering force for the ANZAC landing on 25 April 1915 and so was amongst the first ashore at around 4:30 am. He was wounded in action on 27 April 1915 suffering a serious gunshot wound to his left arm (compound fracture of humerus) and was evacuated to Egypt. He was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis on 1 May 1915 where his arm was later amputated.
Returned to Australia, Sugden embarked from Suez on H.M.T. Ballarat and disembarked in Melbourne, Victoria on 6 August 1915. Following his returned to Western Australia he was assessed as being medically unfit and discharged.
On 25 April 1917 he married Dora Edina Burnet at Saint Mary's Anglican Church in South Perth – they would have four children. The couple soon after moved into a house, they called ‘Ilkey’, on Percy Road in Claremont and for a time Sugden served as a member of the Claremont Road Board.
In July 1919, Sugden was appointed an Agricultural Bank Inspector for the York district of Western Australia, a position he held for many years, with the couple residing at a property called ‘Inglefel’ at York.
During the Second World War Sugden was a Lance Corporal in the Australian Army's Volunteer Defence Corps at York.
The couple left York in 1963 and retired to the Perth suburb of Dalkeith, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
Edgar Sudgen died on 18 September 1972 whilst his wife Dora, passed away in 1980.
