Private George Alfred Barham (Service No:3779) enlisted in the AIF on 3 November 1915, initially with 34 Depot Coy, and was attached to 28th Infantry Battalion on 12 February 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Egypt on board HMAT A28 Militiades. Private Barham served with 7 Training Battalion in Zeitoun and Tel el Kebir, and was attached to 51st Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 5 June 1916. Private Barham served with 13th Trench Mortar Battery in France, where on 24 March 1917 he was accidentally wounded during live practice with grenades - evacuated to Reading War Hospital in England, Private Barham suffered double amputation of legs (NAA). He embarked from England for Fremantle on 13 December 1918 on board HT Karoola and was attached to 13th Trench Mortar Battery at Discharge on 25 April 1920.
George was born in Toolangi, Victoria in 1892, second of five children of Alfred John Barham (b1861 in Bullarto, Victoria) and Ellen North (b1865 in Melbourne, Victoria). Alfred (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1888 in Ballarat, Victoria and lived in Toolangi, Woodbourne and Melbourne before moving to Western Australia in 1896. Alfred and Ellen lived in Denmark and Kellerberrin where they raised their family and Alfred was a Labourer until his death in 1904 - Ellen died in 1908.
George worked in Collie as a Sleeper Hewer and Labourer before enlisting in the AIF in 1915. Following his Discharge, George lived in Westonia, WA where he was a Picture Proprietor and, in 1920 in Perth, married Jessie Avery Thomas (b1896 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Jessie was a Confectionary Worker in Perth. Jessie died in childbirth in 1923, and George, then a Boot Repairer in Perth, remarried in 1925 to Maud Harwood (b1901 in Kent, England) - Maud had immigrated with her parents in 1906, arriving in Fremantle, WA on board the Ormutz. George and Maud settled in Perth, where George worked as a Lift Attendant until his death in 1957. Maud died in 1973.
