102 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 24th July 1922, Private Albert Burge, 34th Battalion (Reg No-7180A), carter and wharf labourer from 6 Church Street, Newcastle West, New South Wales and 5 Tourle Street, Mayfield West, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 32. CATHOLIC 1-26. 36.
Never married.

Born at Cooks Hill, New South Wales on the 3rd October 1891 as BUSH to Joseph Emanuel (Joe Bush), died 3.6.1929, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 84, from 5 Tourle Street, Mayfield, N.S.W. and Robertson Street, Carrington, N.S.W., and Amelia Burge nee Fisher, died 5.8.1896, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 21 as BUSH, from 169 Parry Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., Albert enlisted on the 4th February 1918 with the 19th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 28th February 1918.

Admitted to hospital 14.9.1918 (influenza).

Commenced return to Australia 3.9.1919.

Admitted ship's hospital at sea 2.10.1919 (not stated).
Albert arrived home on the 24th October 1919, being discharged on the 4th December 1919.

Mr. Burge’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Branch (1086) Grand United Order of Oddfellows Roll of Honour. A member of the Newcastle & District Trolley, Drayman & Carters' Union, no Roll of Honour produced.

I have placed poppies at Albert’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
