Daniel was the youngest of nine children of William Henry Hale (born 1850 in London, England) and Mary Ann John (born 1856 in Fremantle, Western Australia). William - a Carpenter - and Mary married in Fremantle in 1877. Their family was raised in Fremantle, WA.

Daniel was a Civil Servant in Fremantle, WA when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1916. He served with 23rd Reinforcements 11th Infantry Battalion as a Private (Service No:7047), and was WIA (GSW to leg and arm) in France in 1917. He was Discharged in August 1918. Brothers Arthur Harry Vernon Hale (Service No:15101) and Walter Horace Elgar Hale (Service No:815) also served in WWI.

Returning to Fremantle, WA and working as a Civil Servant, Daniel married Rachel McCormack (born 1904 in Donegal, Ireland) in 1925. Daniel and Rachel settled in Fremantle, WA where Daniel worked as a Civil Servant. He and Rachel both died in 1967.
