Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Harry or Henry Craw was the son of Robert Brown Craw and Eleanor Mary Craw, of Leichhardt, New South Wales, born and raised in Ashfield, New South Wales.

Harry only left Sydney in June 1915 and was taken on strength of the 3rd Battalion a couple of days before the Battle of Lone Pine. He simply disappeared, reported missing, and it was November 1916 before the official verdict of ‘confirmed as killed in action 7-12 August 1915’, filtered back to his family in Sydney.

During 1921 Harry’s remains were found, near the Lone Pine Cemetery, and confirmed by the presence of his identity disc, and the disc was returned to his mother during December 1921, six years after he was reported missing.

Harry’s father, Robert Brown Craw died during 1920.

A gravestone at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney, NSW, is inscribed,

“In Loving Memory of Robert Brown Craw.....also in fond and loving memory….of my dear son Harry...killed in action August 1915 in the Battle of Lone Pine, Gallipoli aged 24 years.....”
