Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Private Olof Ernest Ohlson was one of two sons of Olaf and Hilda Ohlson, of Adventure Bay, Bruny Island, who died during WW1. His dad had been born in Sweden and came out to Tasmania in 1885.

Private Ohlson embarked from Hobart on 1 July 1916. He was 6-foot 1-inch in height and weighed well over 12 stone so he was a large man for the time. He contracted influenza on 29 August 1916 and was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital. He proceeded overseas on 24 January 1917 and was wounded in action only six days, on 30 January 1917, with a gunshot wound in the foot. Although he was moved to a hospital in Boulogne within a few days, he was reported as dangerously ill and died on 26 February 1917.

Private Ohlson’s brother, Thomas, was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, in France during September 1916.
