Jack' parents were John Ramsbotham and Alice Caroline French. Jack attended North Pine State School. He had to obtain his parents' permission when he enlisted on 13 June 1915 as he was under 21. He returned to Coffs Harbour after the war and married Una Falkender on 19 August 1930.
