Honoured
Military Medal, Sergeant Claude Loftus NOWLAND 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the morning of the 29th September 1918 at HARGICOURT, West of Bellicourt. Sergeant NOWLAND was in charge of a gun on the left flank of the Battery which was consistenly under a very heavy enemy bombardment from the North East. Just before Zero Hour the Camourflage covering his Gun was set alight by an enemy shell, this N.C.O. went alone and extinguished the fire thus saving a large quantity of ammunition stacked ready to fire in our Barrage. He ran great danger from enemy shell-fire and from an explosion of his own ammunition. Throughout the whole of our Barrage and under enemy shell-fire the whole time he carried out his duties in a most excellent manner, setting a fine example of courage to his men until he was eventually dangerously wounded. This N.C.O. died of wounds on 29th September 1918.' Brigadier General Commanding 2nd Aust. Div. Arty. |
