Charles Alfred Wilson "Charlie" was born on 26th March 1892 at Snapper Point (now Mornington) Victoria, son of Albert Edward Wilson and Ann Elizabeth (Absalom).
Like his father, he was a butcher. At the age of 23, he enlisted on 14/7/15 and served in the AIF in Egypt, but suffered health problems related to mitral heart disease - probably as a result of the rheumatic fever that he had contracted 3 years prior to his enlistment. This resulted in him being returned to Australia and being discharged as medically unfit.
Not to be denied his duty to serve God, King and Empire, he concealed both his previous service and heart condition and re-enlisted, being accepted into the 22nd re-enforcements of the 5th Infantry Battalion AIF on 30/8/16. He was shipped to England aboard the HMAT Ulysses and arrived in Plymouth 3 days after Christmas in 1916. During mid-winter training at the Larkhill military camp on Salisbury Plain, he developed pneumonia and was sent to the Fargo military hospital where he died 8 days later on 19/2/17. He is buried at the Larkhill military cemetery (grave 205) near Durrington in Wiltshire. Charlie may not have fired a shot in anger but he certainly tried to do his duty for his country, not once...but twice.
