Son of Horace & Hannah ROGERS nee BROWNE
The first break in the well - known Rogers family, of Proserpine, has occurred with the sudden death of Mr. Joseph Rogers aged 63. Mr. Rogers suffered an attack of influenza about a month ago, and was laid up for a week. However, he returned to his work with the Railway Department, where he had been working in recent years, but collapsed on the job. His sudden death came as a great shock to the members of his family and his many friends.
Prior to World War 1, Mr. Rogers engaged in farming in the Kelsey district. In 1916 at the age of 20, he enlisted and served with the 9th and 49th Battalions. While moving up to the front line in France his party was struck by a shell which killed many men and he spent 8 months in hospital. He returned to France and was wounded on two more occasions before the termination of the war.
He returned to Proserpine in 1919 and married Miss Hilda Drinkwater (of Kelsey Creek). In the Intervening years he followed various occupations, but had been with the Railway Department for several years. He is survived by his wife and daughter (Mrs. Jim Shepherd), 3 grand children, four brothers, Messrs. Horace (Brisbane), Alf (Bowen), Frank and Fred (Proserpine), two sisters, Mrs P. Meeham (Nundah) and Mrs. N. L. Sneyd (Mackay)
Until recent years Mr. Rogers took an active interest in the activities of the Proserpine Sub-branch of the RSSAILA.
Deceased was accorded a military funeral, the casket being draped with the Australian flag, and members of the RSSAILA were pall-bearers. Rev. Fr. S. J. Hessey officiated at the services and Mr. W. Worthington read the RSSAILA burial service.
