Son of William Henry Valentine and Constance Valentine nee Ransom of Rupert Street, Launceston, Tasmania.

Brother of Ernest Russell William Valentine who returned to Australia on 8 June 1919 having served with the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column. Cyril Hugh Valentine who returned to Australia on 12 June 1919 having served with the 40th Battalion.

Husband of Edith M. Valentine nee Cheston of Portland Place, New Lambton, NSW, Herbert and Edith married in Mereweather, NSW during 1905c

Commenced return to Australia on 24 August 1918 aboard HT Medic disembarking on 9 October 1918

81 years ago today, on the 8th November 1942, Private Herbert Maurice Valentine, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2414), wagon builder from Portland Place, New Lambton, New South Wales and 31 Young Street, Waratah, N.S.W., father of two (Constance (Connie) Ransom, 1907-1994), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. ANGLICAN 3-163. 15.

Herb had died on the 7th November 1942 at the Western Suburbs Hospital, N.S.W., and the 8th November 1942 was a Sunday, no funeral notice located.

Born at Deloraine, Tasmania about 1875 to William Henry and Constance Valentine of Rupert Street, Launceston, Tasmania; husband of Edith Mary Valentine nee Cheston (married 1905, Merewether, N.S.W., died 11.8.1943, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 68, sleeping here) of 31 Young Street, Waratah, N.S.W., Herb enlisted on the 9th March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Herb returned home invalided on the 9th October 1918 (no reason given), being discharged medically unfit on the 29th October 1918.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Herb’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Was not granted Victory Medal.

Older brother Ernest Russell William (born 1872? Fingal, Tasmania, sports manager from Rupert Street, Launceston, Tasmania, enlisted 19.8.1915, 12th Battalion, Reg No-3907, RTA 8.6.1919, 4th Australian Divisional Ammunition Column, died?, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.

Younger brother Cyril Hugh (born 1883? St Leonards, Tasmania, bank accountant from Rupert Street, Launceston, Tasmania, enlisted 1.11.1916, 40th Battalion, Reg No-3161, RTA 12.6.1919, died?, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.
