Add my storyBiography contributed by VWM Australia
He served initially with the 48th Battalion on the Western Front and ended up on the General Staff with then Col. John Gellibrand.
In his comprehensive autobiography he mentioned that, as a Corporal stretcher bearer he carried the severely injured Albert Jacka off the battlefield at Pozieres. He commented that "I did not think I would get him in alive". Additionally, he commented That "Jacka was, without doubt, the bravest man I ever knew. I reckon he should have received a decoration every time he went into the line".
In addition to his Military Cross earned at Messines on 7 June 1917 for "gallantry and devotion to duty", he was awarded the Russian Order of St. George for his actions at Poziers in 1916".
"Skipper's" medals are now held in the Army Museum at Bandiana, Victoria.
