- Axel was born on 30 October 1882 in Sweden
- He arrived in Melbourne on 08 NOV 1911 as a seaman on the vessel Archibald Russell and jumped ship.
- He became a naturalised Australian on 21 AUG 1912
- He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Holsworthy on 30 AUG 1915.
- He was 32 years and 10 months old at the time of enlistment.
- He was posted to the 7th Reinforcements to the 20th Battalion AIF.
- He left Australia on 23 DEC 1915 to go to Egypt. The 20th Battalion had been in Gallipoli since August but withdrew on 20 DEC 1915 and went to Egypt for further training where Axel joined them.
- On 16 FEB 1916 he was transferred to the 56th Battalion when it was raised in Egypt as part of the 14th Brigade.
- The 56th Brigade went from Egypt to France, arriving on 30 JUN 1916.
- On 18 JUL 1916 Axel was attached to 14th Brigade HQ as a runner.
- On 31 OCT 1916 he was wounded with a severe gunshot wound to the chest.
- On 12 NOV 1916 he was invalided to England.
- On 15 NOV 1916 he was admitted to hospital in Bristol.
- On 13 MAR 1917 he returned to France and on 09 APR 1917 rejoined his unit.
- On 06 JUL 1917 he was attached to the 14th Light Trench Mortar Battery. On 14 JUL 1917 he was formally transferred to that unit.
- On 27 SEP 1917 he was again wounded in action with a shrapnel wound to his left arm. He recuperated in France, moving hospitals twice.
- On 17 FEB 1918 he again rejoined his unit.
- On 31 JAN 1919 he marched out of his unit and was transferred to England in preparation for repatriation to Australia
- On 08 APR 1919 he left England, arriving in Australia on 25 MAY 1919
- He was discharged 18 JUL 1919
- He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal
- He passed on 02 SEP 1953 aged 60 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetary.
