Harry Smith was born in approximately March 1876 in Hobart Tasmania. His religion was Church of England. He was a labourer and lived at 26 Queen Street, Thebarton, South Australia.
On the 18th of February 1916, Harry Smith enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. When he was enlisted, he was 39, his height was 5” and 3 ¾ and he weighed 130 lbs. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and auburn hair.
Harry Smith was first assigned to the 43rd Battalion. He was a private and fought in the Battle of Messines in June 1917 and later in the Battle of Warneton on 31 July 1917. He was admitted on June 1917 for shell shock and then again 2 months later for a gunshot wound in the nose. He was taken to England for treatment and then he was eventually discharged due to his injuries and returned back to Australia on the 21st of December 1917.
He returned back to his wife Mrs Elsie Isabel Smith; they had no children. Harry Smith Sadly passed away due to natural causes on the 1st of February 1959 at the age of 83. He was buried at the Cheltenham Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.
