106 years ago today, on the 10th June 1917, Private Donald Desmond Geary, referred to as Don, 36th Battalion (Reg No-2076), stockman from "Mundaribba", Moonan Flat, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by a high explosive artillery shell during the Battle of Messines, age 20.
No Roll of Honour circular summited.
Born at Moonan Flat, New South Wales on the 13th April 1897 to James Joseph (died 30.9.1937, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 68) and Annie Cecilia Geary nee Driscoll (died 14.8.1934, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 63) of "Lynthorpe", Station Street, Waratah, N.S.W., Don enlisted on the 20th March 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th August 1916.
Admitted to hospital 3.4.1917 (scabies).
Place of Association – Moonan Flat, New South Wales, Australia.
Mr. Geary’s name has also been inscribed on the Scone & District's Honour Roll, Scone War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool and Stone Memorial, Scone War Memorial Library, Scone RSL Club Roll of Honour, Moonan Brook Church Roll of Honor.
Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Geary gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Don’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 2-36. 47.
