Edwin left Melbourne on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 30 October 1917 and reached England on 27 December. His unit, the 27th Battalion was sent to France on 1 April 1918 where he fought until the Armistice. In June 1918 he was hospitalised with illness and was able to rejoin his battalion a month later. Edwin returned to Australia on the Frankfurt from England on 1 July 1919, reaching Australia on 17 August and was discharged on 10 September.
