75 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 18th October 1948, Private Stephen Jess, served as Stephen Cassidy, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-3045), labourer from 129 Nelson Street, Annandale, New South Wales and Wallsend?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 52. CATHOLIC 2-51. 97.

Born at Bathurst, New South Wales on the 26th December 1895 to John and Ann Cassidy, Stephen enlisted on the 5th November 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 23rd December 1915.
Wounded in action - 22.7.1916 (shell shock).

Illegal Absentee from 19.11.1918 to 1.4.1920. Discharged 21st July 1920. Unknown date of return to Australia.

Mr. Jess’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall as CASSIDY.
Was not granted War Medals (discharged in consequence of desertion 1.4.1920).
Service record states Died after Discharge, 16/10/1948.
