Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Frederick Henry Jackson was born in Cowra, NSW on the 23rd of April, 1898, born to Reginald and Mary Jackson.(1) They lived on Willoughby Street, Epping, NSW. The Jacksons followed the religion of the Church of England(2).

Frederick Henry Jackson attended (Sydney) Technical High School ([S]THS)(3), enrolling in 1913, according to school records of his class, 1B going in class 2D the next year. Frederick finished attending secondary school in 1916, the year he turned 18 years old. After leaving (Sydney) Technical High School, Frederick was employed to work as a clerk in a bank(4) in NSW. Like his school records, his employment records were unclear, however in 1911, was the establishment of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia which likely would’ve been the bank Frederick worked at.

Before enlisting in World War 1, Frederick joined the 20th Infantry Battalion of the Australian Army(5) because of the legislation for compulsory military training that was introduced in 1909 by Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, which was passed in 1911 and continued until 1929.

On the 23rd of May, 1918, Frederick had enlisted into the army at an enlistment office in Eastern Sydney, with his parent’s consent.(6) Frederick was enrolled into the 56th Infantry Battalion of the Australian Army as a Private (PTE)(7) and embarked on the HMAT SS Gaika on the 30th of July 1918(8) on a journey to the Western Front. He disembarked at London 13th October 1918 and marched in to Hurdcott and soon after was hospitalised with influenza. He remained in England until January 1919 to assist with the clean-up.

There is not much of any information regarding Frederick Henry Jackson’s life after the war, other than a Statutory Declaration Form filled by Frederick in 1939(12) regarding his Certificate of Discharge, where he states, “On being married 17 years I left the house of my parents and left my discharge with a lot of old papers.” Which tells us Frederick was married in 1922 and left his parent’s house, aside for that, there isn’t any locatable papers regarding his marriage and life after the fact. He has been included on many honour rolls, including: Carlingford Honour Roll, Norwest Mitchell Remembers Roll of Honour, Sydney Technical High School WW1 Roll Of Honour.(13)
