Son of Martin Voigt and Annie Voigt nee Starrick of Natimuk, Victoria. Brother of Frederick John Voigt who returned to Australia on 20 October 1919 Having served with the 39th Battalion.

Prior to enlisting he was a member of the Mitre Lake Rifle club

Commenced return to Australia on 28 March 1919 aboard HT City of Poona disembarking on 14 May 1919

During 1922c John married Catherine Mary Zippel in Victoria
