Alfred Mervyn Sandercock was born in Kadina, South Australia, on the 24th of February, to Emma Sandercock, his next of kin. He grew up with several siblings in his family, including Wilfred James, Oswald Keith, and others. Alfred attended Goodwood Public School and later Adelaide High School. After school he studied to become a teacher.
When Alfred was only 18 years and 6 months old, he enlisted for service in the Australian Imperial Force on 14th of September 1915. He was assigned to the 10th Infantry Battalion and was given the service the service number 3897. He was noted to be of fair complexion, with blue eyes and dark hair. He stood at 5 feet 2 (157cm) and weighed 54 kg. His religion was recorded as Methodist.
On 2nd December 1915, Alfred left Adelaide on the RMS Malwa, joining other solders headed for the battlefront.
At the remarkable age of 96, Alfred Mervyn Sandercock passed away on January 11, 1995. He was buried in section K, Road 4, Grave 41, West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide, South Australia.
