Reginald Clyde COMPTON, (Service Number 516) was born at Goulburn in 1889. He joined the NSWGR as a call boy at Junee locomotive depot in 1905, was promoted there to cleaner in 1906, and fireman in 1910. In 1912 he transferred to Eveleigh and was promoted to engine driver there in May 1914. In January 1915, however, he suffered a sharp reverse in his career: he was reduced to fitter’s labourer. The reason for this reduction is not stated on his employee card, but it may have prompted his decision to enlist in the AIF. He was released from duty, and enlisted, in February 1915, at Liverpool.
