53 years ago today, on the 12th May 1972, Private Vincent Haggarty, referred to as Vince or Vin, 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-1442), stockman from Windeyer Street, Dungog, New South Wales and Ward's River, N.S.W. (1929) and Boolaroo, N.S.W. (1960) and Argyle Avenue, Anna Bay, N.S.W. (1967) and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 83. CATHOLIC 3-92. 39.

Born at Belbora, New South Wales on the 7th December 1888 to Horatio, referred to as Jack, died 7.8.1929, Dungog Hospital, N.S.W. age 76, from Winsor Street, Dungog, N.S.W., and Emily Haggarty, died 20.10.1937, 4 Arnold Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 78, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, GENERAL-34.1, unmarked grave?, Sandgate Cemetery database listed as HAGGERTY, mother of 4?, from Winsor Street, Dungog, N.S.W.; husband of Elsie May Haggarty nee Walterback, married 1922, Clarence Town, N.S.W., died 26.10.1969, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 66, sleeping here.

Vince enlisted on the 19th August 1915 with the 1st Double Squadron at Warwick Farm, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A47 Mashobra on the 4th October 1915.

Admitted to hospital 3.2.1916 (mumps), 8.7.1916 (myalgia, lung trouble), 3.8.1916 (cardiac), 29.4.1918 (pleurodynia), 4.5.1918 (pleurisy), 25.11.1918 (influenza).

Commenced return to Australia 13.3.1919.

Vince arrived home on the 19th April 1919, being discharged medically unfit (pleurodynia) on the 16th June 1919.

Mr. Haggarty’s name has been inscribed on the Dungog & District Honour Roll and the Bandon Grove, Bendolba & District Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Vince’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
