Mr Gilbert Barber was born in Barry Town, South Wales 1889. He had a fair complexion with blue eyes and light brown hair. At the age of 26 he enlisted into the Australian Army at Keswick South Australia. He was the Enrolled into the 32nd Battalion, B Company. In late 1917 he was transferred to the 8th Machine Gun co mpany and wounded in action on 18 November 1917. While in England recuperating he went AWL and was apprehended on 31 October 1918. In early 1919 he deserted and was not recaptured. he was declared ineligible for war service medals.
