Biography contributed by Larna Malone

Thomas Leslie Barratt was born in Eaglehawk, Vic, in 1893, the second son of Alexander BARRATT and Mary Grace ALLEN.   He was known as 'Tom'.   His father was a Miner and the family moved back and forth between Eaglehawk and Broken Hill, NSW, following the available work in the Mines.

When 'Tom' was 4 years old his mother died in South Broken Hill, leaving a family of three boys.   His father moved the family back to Victoria, where they settled in Golden Square.

When 'Tom' was 7 years old his father re-married, his spouse being Annie WHITE.   Annie had a son, Sydney, about 10 years old.   Annie became stepmother to the 3 BARRATT boys, and the family grew in size when 2 more children were born.   In later years 'Tom' would list Annie BARRATT (nee WHITE) as his mother, and she is so described on his Service Record.

'Tom' was educated at Golden Square State School and attended the Golden Square Methodist Church.   As a member of the Citizen Forces he rose to the rank of Color Sergeant in the 8th A.I.R. and retained the rank when the 8th A.I.R. merged into the 67th Regiment.   He was a prominent rifle shot and won several individual prizes in Bendigo.   A Bootmaker by trade, he completed his three year apprenticeship at the Bendigo Boot Factory and later had a shop in Golden Square.

In September, 1914, Thomas Leslie BARRATT and his younger brother, Albert James Stanley BARRATT, volunteered for service in the AIF.   Both were appointed to the 14th Battalion and arrived at Broadmeadows Camp together on 1st October, 1914.

Thomas Leslie BARRATT signed the Attestation Papers on October 20, 1914.   Aged 21 years & 11 months, he was described as being 5' 7" tall, weighed 10 stone, with brown eyes and black hair.   He was appointed Sergeant in 'G' Company of the 14th Battalion, with Service No. 1197.

The 14th Battalion embarked for overseas on 22nd December, 1914, per Transport "Ulysses".   Disembarking in Egypt the battalion continued training before embarking to join the Gallipoli campaign.

The 14th Battalion Disembarked at Anzac Cove on the morning of 26th April, and went into the Line at Courtney's Post on 27th April.

Thomas Leslie BARRATT was Killed in Action on 1st May, 1915.   He lies in an un-identified grave and is commemorated on Special Memorial 3 in the Courtney's and Steele's Post Cemetery.   The Special Memorial consists of a headstone tablet with the words:

BELIEVED TO BE BURIED IN THIS CEMETERY                     1197   SERJEANT  T L BARRATT                                   14TH BN AUSTRALIAN INF.                                              1 MAY 1951   AGE 21                                             A KIND AND LOVING SON                                                          [cwgc]
