Son of Robert and Agnes HOOD, 91 alice Street, Auburn, New South Wales

Colin Ferguson Hood was born at Joadja Creek near Mittagong in NSW. It was a thriving mining town between 1870–1911. It was home for approximately 1,200 people, many of whom were skilled immigrants from Scotland, where Colin’s parents came from. The town existed to mine oil shale from which kerosene was extracted. Colin was killed in action near Pozieres, France on 24 July 1916 when a shell burst and buried him in a trench, aged 24. He has no known grave. Colin had eight brothers and sisters, the oldest, 3687 Sgt Alex Hood 1st Australian Tunneling Company, was killed in Belgium on 30 October 1917, at the age of 43.

Private Colin Ferguson Hood, who is 24 years of age, and is the sixth son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hood, of "Argyle," Gordon-road,  Auburn, is reported missing between 22nd and 25th July. He left for the front towards the end of December last, and was attached  to B Company, 2nd Battalion. His eldest brother, Alex., is also at the front with the mining corps.

Some little time ago official intimation was received that Private Colin Ferguson Hood, brother of Mr. C. S. F. Hood, Clerk of Works to the West Maitland Municipal Council, was found to be missing after the battle of Pozieres. As a result of inquiries,  private information has now been received which establishes the fact that he was then killed in action by a shell explosion. Deceased was a son of Mr. Robert Hood, of Auburn, and was 23 years of age. He was in the 2nd Battalion and left Sydney on his birthday last December.
