Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
73 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 9th June 1952, Farrier Corporal Cyril James Ryan, 5th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-10205), blacksmith from Gosforth, New South Wales and 27 King Street, Cessnock, N.S.W. (1938) and 13 Wells Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., father of four daughters, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61. CATHOLIC 2-33. 142.
Born at Lochinvar, New South Wales on the 20th November 1890 to Patrick J and Annabella Ryan; husband of Mary Pauline Ryan nee O'Neill, married 1926, Cessnock, N.S.W., died 30.7.1965, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 69, sleeping here, Cyril enlisted on the 4th September 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 17th December 1915.
Granted leave to France from 6.8.1917 to 16.8.1917 and to England from 20.9.1918 to 8.10.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 15.5.1919.
Cyril arrived home on the 6th July 1919, being discharged on the 29th August 1919.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Mr. Ryan’s name has been inscribed on the Lochinvar & Keinbah Districts Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Cyril’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
The tragic circumstances of Cyril’s death were reported: injured while doing voluntary work on a church at Tighe's Hill
