Son of Patrick Vaughan and Margaret Vaughan nee Rigney of Dry Street, Inveresk, Launceston, Tasmania.
Apprenticed for five years with Peters Bros, Ironmongers of Launceston, Tasmania. Had also previously served with the Australian Navy for about four years.
Husband of Lydia Frances May Vaughan nee Pugh of Salisbury, England. John and Lydia married on 19 September 1919 at the Registry Office, Salisbury, England. E.D. Jackson, Deputy Registrar, officiated.
Commenced return to Australia on 15 November 1919 aboard HT Yperinga disembarking on 4 January 1920 at Melbourne for onward travel to Tasmania.
