His mother was Annie Smith, James Street Mt. Gambier. A younger brother 6905 Private Malcolm Archie Alexander Smith, 3rd Australian Machine Gun Battalion, was killed in action 18 September 1918, age 28.

Another brother, 1500 Duncan William Smith served with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment and returned to Australia in 1919.
