William was reported as gassed, shell gas poisoning on 2 October 1917 and hospitalised in Reading War Hospital, England.

William married Gladys Wilkinson in Plantagenet District in 1927.  They had two sons, William Joseph (DOB 1933) and Donald (DOB 1935).
