Resting at Sandgate Cemetery (do you remember me?).
77 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 10th November 1942, Private Leslie Williams, also known as Punner, 18th Battalion, cook from 95 Railway Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Marks Point, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 23 SE. 27.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 29th September 1889 to Thomas and Anne Williams of 131 Scott Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, Leslie enlisted July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Discharged on the 21.10.1915 as unlikely to become an efficient soldier, Leslie reenlisted August 1917 with the 18th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 23.7.1918 (GSW thigh, gas), Mr Williams was invalided home August 1919 with gas poisoning.

Leslie’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and the Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 13th December 1918).
On the 7th November 1942, Punner was tragically killed when walking on the Pacific Highway near Belmont, N.S.W.
